Florida Training 2009-2010

With the new year beginning another Florida trip comes to an end. Overall it was a great trip. Although there were a few bumps (the weather stunk) in the road early on, the team performed very well once they got their bearings for long course swimming.

Our Florida trip was really a transition for us from the aerobic training we did the first semester into the second phase of our season that we categorize as anaerobic/explosive. Here we really try to focus on developing race strategies, explosiveness and quality of the practices.

Aside from the rigors of training the team did have an opportunity to enjoy some activities outside of the pool. Coach Bocci and I cooked dinner for the team one evening.....we grilled chicken (teriaki and tequila lime), hot dogs and burgers, while the men made sides and the women desserts. The ladies also got together a few times for team dinners out....boy they look pretty good all dressed up! The team also showed their Pittsburgh spirit taking in a hockey game......about 30 of us drove 30 minutes as The Penguins visited the Sunshine State to play the Florida Panthers (thanks Kim for organizing everything). Despite the loss, we had a great time and my son Ben got to attend his first hockey game.

Aside from all of the other activities, we had our traditional team dinner before we headed back. This year we tried somewhere different, ditching shooters on the inner coastal and heading downtown to Las Olas and Mangos. The food and the company was great and some of the team even took in a little shopping.

We are now back in Pittsburgh preparing ourselves for the home stretch. We open the second semester next week against Cleveland State and Xavier. From there we have our Senior Day against Pitt and then we travel to Morgantown for a double dual against WVU and Virginia Tech. I'm looking forward to some fast swimming as we head into the conference championships!

See you around the pool,
Dave
